They are dried cookies of the Baix Ebre region, light and empty inside, that solved the stomach problems of Pope Benet XIII, known like "Papa Luna". It is told that a doctor suggested the pontiff to ingest only a concentrate of flour, egg and sugar to alleviate the belly he suffered. It was a neighbour of Bitem (Tortosa) who found the formula to turn these three ingredients into the 'garrofetes'.
