This river is born in the Els Ports range, near the summit of Caro. It is the geographical accident marking the boundary between the municipalities of Beseit, Cretes, Lledó, Arenys de Lledó and Calaceite (belonging to the Matarranya region) with those of Arnes, Horta de Sant Joan and Caseres (already in Terra Alta territory).
